Coffee Bean Roasters

As mentioned earlier the roasting process brings out the essential flavour of the coffee. Hence this is a crucial process for a great tasting coffee.

During the roasting process, the beans are heated and will gradually increase in size and turn dark. This is due to the movement of oil inside the beans to the surface which also gives the beans' surface a shiny appearance. This also indicates that the beans are well roasted.

Commercially, the coffee beans are roasted in large cylindrical drums with the beans being continuous fed with a conveyor belt. However equipment are available for carrying out your own roasting at home.

Although one can just use a frying pan to do so but this takes a lot of guess work and is not precise. It is better to use commercially made home roaster. These days modern home roasters come with preprogrammed or can be programmed for carrying out roasting according to one's particular taste. The following are some tips on buying a home roaster.

Home Roaster Buying Tips

  • Small and compact in size. This is a home roaster and we won't want one that's bulky and takes up lots of space at home.
  • Comes with preset roasting programmes but has the option that allow one to input your own roasting profile/programme.
  • Come with built in temperature monitoring and LCD display. An LCD display is very helpfull in programming and in monitoring the roasting cycles.
  • User friendly, easily to assemble out of the box and with well written and clear user manual
  • Preferably uses hot air or fluid bed - this uses hot air which provides an event roast between all of the beans.
  • Easy to clean after the roasting process.
  • Energy efficient.

More Roasting Tips

Remember it is the oils that give coffee it's distinctive taste and flavours. These oil are brought up during roasting. However over roasting evaporates most of these oils, thus as a guide,

  • A lightly roasted beans keep more of the original flavour while darker roast coffee beans will taste more stronger.

It's recommended to watch the entire roasting process for best results as every batch of beans is different. Thus a roasting profile which maybe suitable of one batch of beans may not be suitable for another batch. It is good to document every roast made. Information like type of beans, the amount roasted, roasting cycles and the end results.

Once completed, let the beans cool and degas ( release Carbon dioxide ) for at least 24 hours or more before using.

Best to roast enough quantity for one requirement/use. As freshness is there. If not used, store them in air tight containers and in cool or refrigerated place.
